Illuminated manuscripts

Illuminated manuscripts are manuscripts that are inscribed with decorative borders, capitals and illustrations. Although the writing itself was not the focus of the work, the detail that was put into the actual page design and illustrations was tremendous. Not only were the manuscripts lavishly decorated, they were decorated with gold or silver. Each of the pages was as remarkably decorated as the last so it took a tremendous amount of time to create a book. Considerable planning was used beforehand to draw the layout of the page long before any paint actually hit the page. Because of the gold or silver material used, only the wealthy were able to purchase an illuminated manuscript. It was mostly churches who owned a manuscript. Although the pages originally started out using just gold and silver, other colors began to show up in the manuscripts. Materials such as lapis lazuli, cinnabar and malachite were used to form the colors. However, sometimes material such as earwax or urine was used as a base for the colors. The term illuminated manuscript usually refers to just the manuscripts just decorated in gold or silver but it is sometimes also used to describe any richly decorated, colorful manuscript whether it has gold, silver or none at all. Because of the cost and time to produce a manuscript, it was eventually given up to a more traditional book that could be more easily reproduced. The newer books were not as lavishly decorated so it took less time to produce. Although illuminated manuscripts were no longer being produced, the pages of existing manuscripts still remain behind for others to enjoy.

Comics

There is a bank robbery, a car jacking or a bomb and suddenly a hero appears in just the nick of time to save the day. Earlier comics were viewed as corrupted and a bad influence on children. That is because earlier comics were very gruesome. It was common to see murder, sexual behavior, robbery, zombies and decapitation. Such scenes were not appropriate for children to view so comics drew much criticism. To combat this, a rating system was created and many of the popular comics such as Batman or Spiderman had to be adapted into a more child friendly version. Although the new adapted comics still had the themes of the older ones, they were less graphic with softer lines and friendlier looking characters. This was done because parents were afraid that children would get the wrong impression of many of the things in the comic books. Because children tend to mimic what they see in front of them, it would be inappropriate for a young child to act out a scene where he is robbing a bank or murdering someone. The rating system became very important because some authors refused to adapt their work for children. The comics had to clearly state the recommended age groups and warning about what the comic contains such a blood, gore and violence. Whether it is the older comics or the newer, child friendly comics, one thing holds true. Wherever there is a person in trouble, there will always be a superhero to swoop in and save the day.

Graffiti - Color the World

Graffiti is the act of drawing on or painting on a wall or similar surface.  To some, graffiti is viewed as defacing public property but to others, it is a work of art. The act of graffiti can be very dangerous. Graffiti is sometime the subject of gang related issues. Fights have broken out when rival gangs claim a location to paint or paint over a gang’s existing graffiti. Occasionally, such gang squabbles will actual lead to murder. Sometimes, it is not gangs that pose a danger as much as the location of the graffiti. Whether it is on the side of a train, building, or even in the middle of a busy street, there is always a risk of something happening. Those who climb buildings have a chance to fall and those who work on a train or street have a chance or being hit. Whatever the location, there is always the risk of being caught. Those who are caught have a chance of being arrested. However, even with all the risk, Graffiti continues to survive. It is a way to express oneself in a creative and artistic way. It can act as an escape from everyday life and can be used as a way to get your name out to the public.  The styles of graffiti are constantly changing. New techniques are sprouting up from many different locations. Even against the many threats, graffiti still manages to exist today in not just one location, but all over the world. Graffiti truly makes the world colorful.
